This is a typical Rwandan recipe loved from everyone as a feast but not an everyday dish for most of them.
"Isombe" are the green leaves from the manioc plant. The leaves get finely mashed and look a bit like our
spinach. From the roots of the manioc plant they make some sort of flour that they cook with water. This is called "bugali".
Geschiedenis van Ruanda
Onafhankelijk van België op 1 juli 1962 [ from Belgium-administered UN trusteeship ]
Bis vor 2000 Jahren bevölkerten Jäger und Sammler das heutige Ruanda, die später von Hirten und
Ackerbauern aus anderen Teilen Afrikas verdrängt wurden. Im 15. Jahrhundert entstand eine feudalistische
Monarchie mit ähnlichen Traditionen und Sitten wie im benachbarten Uganda. Ruanda wurde 1890 deutsche
Kolonie und nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg belgischem Mandat unterstellt. 1962 führte Premierminister Grégoire
Kayibanda das Land in die Unabhängigkeit. Zehn Jahre später wurde er von Juvénal Habyarimana gestürzt,
der 1994 bei einem nie aufgeklärten Flugzeugunglück ums Leben kam. Dieser gilt als Signal für den Beginn des
Völkermordes. Der Völkermord an bis zu einer Million Menschen bestimmt auch heute noch das Bild Ruandas im Ausland, obwohl seit 1995 politische Ruhe und relativer Frieden herrschen.
